Welcome to Wainui Beach

World class surf, golden sandy beaches ...Wainui has it all!

This lovely 3km crescent of golden, sandy beach—just 6km from
Gisborne City—is often portrayed as the archetypical, east coast
of New Zealand, holiday-by-the-sea location.

At its southern-most end is wild Tuahine Point, a thrilling low-tide,
rock-hopping adventure to walk to the derelict Tuahine lighthouse at its tip.

Centre of the bay is known as Okitu, or "Pines" by the surfing fraternity.
Here also is the Wainui Surf Club (surf patrols during summer)
and some of the best waves along the beach.

North from the "Pines" the foreshore in a beach reserve of sand dunes
and pohutukawa trees all the way to Makorori-Wainui headland where there is
a stunning walkway over to Makorori Beach.

Also at the northern end of the beach is the Whales Grave which
remembers the dramatic and fatal beaching of 59 sperm
whales on a stormy March morning in 1970.

Wainui Beach seems purpose-made for people who love
beach life—walking, jogging, swimming, surfing, windsurfing, surfcasting,
Hobie sailing, rock pool exploring, snorkelling, marine reserves—are all happening right
outside your front door.
