Wainui Beach is 6 kilometres from Gisborne city center, heading north on State Highway 35, also known as "The Pacific Coast Highway" ... one of the Pacific's most scenic coastal road journeys.
Gisborne is the main city of the Eastland Region (pop 45,000), a vast triangle on the North Island's eastern seaboard which includes the Eastern Bay of Plenty, the East Cape, Gisborne, Mahia Peninsula, Lake Waikaremoana and Te Urewera National Park.
Gisborne is renowned for its warm, sunny weather ... most years boasting the highest annual sunshine hours in the country. An average 65 days each year have a maximum temperature over 24 degrees Celcius!
We are famous for our beaches, surfing, fishing ... and wine! They call Gisborne the Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand, and even here at Wainui we have an award-winning boutique winery ... Amor Bendall.
Gisborne has always been known as a fabulous beach holiday destination ... the archetypical summer vacation destination.
But hey, the winters aren't so bad either. If its been raining for weeks in Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga ... its usually sunny in Gisborne.
We're 50 minutes by Air New Zealand from both Auckland and Wellington, and around 6-7 hours by car ... a great road trip and a scenic adventure either way.
